This luxurious, intimate camp exudes a quiet grace and charm remnant of a bygone era. Nestled deep in the rugged beauty of the Waterberg mountains, where the giant Makweti tree dominates the landscape, Makweti Safari Lodge is surrounded by pristine wilderness.

Shaped from natural rock, with teak decks overhanging the Makweti gorge, Makweti is an exotic, ultraromantic hideaway, a private sanctuary in the African bush.

This jewel of Welgevonden’s crown has earned itself a place in the Great Hotels of the World’s collection of premier destinations.

Accommodation

Five elegant thatch and stone suites complete this exotic hideaway. Each unique, secluded suite is individually decorated with antique treasures and plush furnishings, to ensure an intimate and romantic experience. Each suite flows on to a private deck, with inviting views of the wild reserve. All suites are complete with indoor and outdoor showers, log fireplaces, and Victorian baths, and enjoy sweeping views of the bushveld. Private plunge pools, available with some suites, offer a refreshing retreat.

Safari

Dawn and dusk safaris in an open safari vehicle, under the direction of an expert guide, are an integral part of the Makweti experience. Walking safaris with armed guards are available upon request. The exclusive Welgevonden reserve’s spectacular game viewing is ready for your enjoyment.

Cuisine

Makweti’s fine dining, and an extensive selection of fine South African estate wines will please even the most discerning palate. Makweti Safari Lodge is a member of Chaine des Rotisseurs for culinary excellence and service, and is featured in Chefs of Distinction. Candlelit gourmet dinners are served in the formal dining room, or under a starry night sky in the boma, beside a flickering campfire. Makweti’s cuisine reflects an artful fusion of exotic spices of the ancient trade routes. A culinary safari.
